Welcome to the NEW website of the 31st Alabama(CSA) and 17th Iowa(US) Reenactors. We are a family oriented group that portrays one of the greatest eras of time by reenacting the American Civil War. We are Living Historians. We hope to help people learn about the American Civil War by showing what happened while having fun at the same time. We enjoy food, fellowship, and lots of fun. We get to meet lots of interesting and sometimes funny people.
Re-enacting with the 31st Alabama Infantry combines a love of history with theater, fellowship, and the escape from the stresses of the 21st century life.
Why do we participate in re-enacting and preserving the memory of men whose lives have long since ceased and events long past. The late Bruce Catton, author of so many volumes on the War Between the States, answered:
“We are people to whom the past is forever speaking. We listen to it because we cannot help ourselves. For the past speaks with many voices. Far out of that nowhere which is the time before we were born, men who were flesh of our flesh and bone of our bone, went through a fire and a storm to break a path for our future. We are a part of the future they died for; they are a part of the past, which brought the future. What they did – the stories they told and the songs they sang, and finally the deaths they died make up a path of our experience. We cannot cut ourselves from it. It is as real to us as something that happened last week. It is a basic part of our heritage as Americans."
